Why Read?

Why Reading Matters in Middle School

  • Improves vocabulary – Reading exposes students to new words and helps them understand and use language more effectively.
  • Builds comprehension – Students learn to understand, analyze, and interpret increasingly complex information.
  • Helps in every subject – Science, social studies, math, and even electives require students to read and understand directions, explanations, and informational texts.
  • Strengthens writing skills – Students who read regularly see examples of good writing, sentence structure, organization, and word choice.
  • Develops critical thinking – Reading encourages students to question, make connections, evaluate information, and form their own opinions.
  • Builds empathy – Stories allow students to experience different perspectives, cultures, backgrounds, and emotions.
  • Increases knowledge – Reading helps students learn about people, places, history, science, current issues, and the world around them.
  • Improves focus and concentration – Regular reading gives students practice staying engaged with something for an extended period of time.
  • Encourages imagination and creativity – Fiction allows students to explore new worlds, ideas, and possibilities.
  • Builds confidence – As students become stronger readers, they are more confident participating in class and tackling challenging assignments.
  • Supports academic success – Students who struggle with reading often struggle to access the content in other classes.
  • Creates lifelong learners – When students discover books they genuinely enjoy, reading can become something they choose to do rather than something they are required to do.

❤️ Perhaps most importantly...

Middle school is a time when students are developing their identities. Books can help them see themselves represented, understand people who are different from them, and realize that they are not alone in the experiences and challenges they face.

A simple message for students could be:

“Reading isn't just about books. Reading helps you understand your classes, your world, other people, and even yourself.”
